Wanneer hij orde op zaken heeft gesteld, snelt hij in 669 v.C weer westwaarts, want Tarhaka heeft opnieuw vaste voet in beneden‑Egypte gekregen. Op de weg naar Egypte sterft Asarhaddon.   In de vorm van het 'Baäl‑verdrag' laat hij een merkwaardig enigszins gehavend testament na. Een dergelijk verdrag was wellicht standaard voor menige stad aan de zee, die min of meer onder Assyrisch toezicht stond.   Tafel van de verdragsoorkonde {adê} voor Baal, de Tyriërs.
