Vervolg Baal-verdrag: “Dit zijn de havens, de wegen, die Asarhaddon, koning van Assyrië, aan zijn dienaar Baal heeft toegewezen: {de steden van Arpad}* naar Akko (Aku) en Dor (Du'ri), de streek van het Filistijnenland geheel en in Byblos het Libanongebergte, de steden in het gebergte geheel, alle steden [...] van Asarhaddon, koning van Assyrië. Baäl, de steden ..., de Tyriërs, mensen {of garnizoenen}, die Asarhaddon, koning van Assyrië, gegeven heeft, ...... in hun schepen en zoveel, als hij er gestuurd heeft in de stad van [Baal] zijn steden, zijn dorpen, zijn havens, die tot ...[...], zoveel als ... zoals tevoren [...] [...] ... [...] aan hun schepen zal hij zich niet vergrijpen. in het land [...] in zijn gebied(en) en zijn dorpen ... [...] zoals tevoren het land van Sidon. Brief(?) van Asarhaddon,[koning] van Assyrië, de oudste (?!) zoon van (Sennacherib] aan Baal, koning van het land van Tyrus na (?) .......... ‑shu, oudste zoon (?) .....”   Wat jammer, dat de namen in met name de laatste zin onleesbaar zijn geworden. We zouden dan in ieder geval met zekerheid ofwel de voorganger van Baal, ofwel het begin van zijn regering hebben geweten.   Sommige zinnen komen zo gefragmenteerd over, dat het haast onbegrijpelijk is. Vast staat wel, dat Baal zich nauwkeurig aan de aanwijzingen van de stadhouder moet houden en voorts wordt duidelijk gemaakt, welke handelswegen hij mag bewandelen en wat te doen met (gestrande) schepen. Baal, the cities ... the Tyrians , people { or } garrisons , which has Asarhaddon , king of Assyria , given ...... in their ships and as much as he has in the city of [ Baal ] are cities , there are controlled villages, ports , which ... [ ... ] as much as ... as before [ ... ] [ ... ] ... [ ... ] He will not commit crimes to their ships in the country [ ... ] in its area (s) and its villages ... [ ... ] As before the land of Sidon. Letter ( ? ) of Asarhaddon, [ king ] of Assyria , the oldest ( ?! ) son (Sennacherib ] to Baal , king of the land of Tyre after ( ? ) ..... Shu, oldest son ( ? ) .....” What a pity that the names in particular the last sentence have become illegible. We would then at least with certainty have known either the predecessor of Baal, or the beginning of his reign. Some phrases come across very  fragmented, that they become almost incomprehensible . It is certain that Baal must adhere closely to the instructions of the governor and also makes clear which trade routes he can walk and what to do with (stranded) ships . All this is accompanied by curses, if he does not keep the agreements.     * probably Arpad? (ARA p.230).
