De voeding bestaat vooral uit wat er uit de zee opgevist wordt. In normale tijden is er ook aanvoer van veel tuinbouwprodukten vanaf het vasteland. Er is een druk bootverkeer tussen het eiland en de vaste wal. Dat varieert van visserijboten, waterboten, ponten, jachten, vrachtschepen en oorlogsschepen. De woonhuizen tellen meerdere verdiepingen en dat was ook wel nodig op de beperkte omvang van het eiland. Strabo zegt: “de huizen waren hoger dan die van Rome”, maar dat was wel veel later. De twee havens waren andere brandpunten in de stad. Enerzijds voor de verschepen van goederen, het bedrijven van de visvangst en de scheepswerven, want er werd een enorm aantal schepen gebouwd.
