In 680 v.C begint de regering van de Assyrische koning Esarhaddon of Asarhaddon. Die heeft in het begin zijn handen vol aan de troonsopvolging en de gebruikelijke opstanden na een regeringswissel. Asarhaddon is niet de oudste broer, maar volgens eigen zeggen wel aangewezen door zijn vader om op te volgen.* Zijn andere broers nemen daar geen genoegen mee en het komt tot een successie‑oorlog, waarbij de beslissing valt in Chanigalbat ten voordele van Asarhaddon. Daarna moet Asarhaddon de strijd aanbinden met Nabu‑zêr‑kitti‑lishir, de zoon van Merodach‑baladan, die weliswaar de goeverneur Ningal‑iddina verslaat, maar daarna dan toch de wijk moet nemen naar het aloude toevluchtsoord Elam. Met het 'zee‑land' in het zuiden komen de Assyriërs nooit tot een definitieve oplossing en dat zal de Assyrische staat uiteindelijk rampzalig worden.   *                     Zie: Prisma Ninivé A.
